Edmonton appears to be bursting with beer events in the next few weeks. It is kind of stunning, actually. I am encouraged that there is such life happening around beer in this town. It is quite the difference from a couple of years ago. Hopefully the momentum keeps going and every month will have a number of beer options available.
At any rate, here is the list of events I am aware of, in chronological order:
Monday September 13: Annual Fall BBQ and Edmonton Homebrewers’ Guild Annual General Meeting. 6:30 at the Alley Kat Brewery. I encourage any homebrewers or homebrewer wannabes to pop by – it is the best place to learn to become a better brewer.
Friday September 17: Alley Kat Pumpkin Pi Spiced Ale Release. Free tasting of their ever-popular fall seasonal from 5-8 pm at the brewery. I hear their latest 15th Anniversary beer might be available too.
Saturday September 18. Liquor Select Beer Fest. It may not be a full-fledged festival, but the west end liquor store is going to be offering samples of 50 different beer. 2:00-5:00 pm. Free.
Thursday September 23: Latest Sugar Bowl-Alley Kat Cask Night. No word yet on the beer. 5:00 pm as usual.
Thursday September 23: An Alberta Beer and Food Pairing with Homebrewer of the Year Co-Winner Patrick Doyle. After finishing up at the Sugar Bowl, head on over to the AlleyKat brewery (again! – any one else catching the common element in these events?) for some indigenous food and beer. Tickets $55. Co-sponsored by Sherbrooke Liquor.
Tuesday September 28: Back at the Sugar Bowl again for a Cask Night with Half Pint’s Dave Rudge. He is bringing a primped up Oktoberfest (the timing is PERFECT for that). Part of his swing through Alberta and Saskatchewan. 5:00 pm, be sure to line up behind me…
October 15: Beer Pairing Dinner with Charles Finkel, from Pike Brewing at Manor Casual Bistro. The first of what will hopefully be a series of beer dinners hosted at the Manor Bistro. 7:00 pm. Tickets $50 (or $60 if you want gratuity and taxes included), available at the Bistro.
October 15 & 16: Sha-Bam – a Beer Festival of Alberta Brewers and Music. Sponsored by the Kidney Foundation and Sherbrooke Liquor, it will highlight Alberta beer and local musicians. I will be talking about this more as it gets closer, but mark your calendars. Mayfield Inn, 3:30-10:00 both nights. Tickets $15 or 2 for $25. As I say, I will provide more details on this later.
This should keep you supplied in good beer for a few weeks.

Dear beer meister. While we are big fans of local beer. We are heading over to ny city for a visit in October and there are over 21 breweries listed for the big apple according to nycitybeer.org. Where’s a gal to start?

My advice: Try them all! One beer at a time…
Slow and steady. Slow and steady.
Have fun!

Damn, I’m going to miss the Sept. 17 & 18 events while I’m in Denver… :p

Me, too, actually – although your destination should ensure you are not without good beer. Denver is a nice consolation prize for missing Edmonton beer events…
As for me, I will report later where I am heading this week.
