Regular readers will remember that I was in Winnipeg last month and spent some time hanging out out with Dave from Half Pints. Well, one of the burdens of being a beer writer is that you actually have to write up your travel experiences to edify interested readers. Such a So I did up a column on my three nights in Winterpeg and some of the beer .
The trip left me pondering the hidden beer secrets every city has. How many people who have never been to Calgary know about the Wild Rose Tap Room, or the Hop in Brew? How many non-Saskatoonites would know where to look to find Paddock Wood on tap? Lord knows Edmonton tourists would search in vain for a pub with a decent beer selection if they didn’t have insider knowledge.
Winnipeg is shy of craft brewers, with Half Pints its only fully-paid up member, but it has a handful of decent beer locations. I would have likely missed many of them if not for Half Pints Dave – the Yellow Dog being a perfect example. So hopefully this article provides the world with some insider info provided by an outsider. There may be other places that Dave omitted and I didn’t make it to, but I imagine this is a solid starting point.
This version ran in Planet S magazine. Word on the street has it that a similar version may run in Vue. I can neither confirm nor deny that rumour…
