Wild Rose has three, count ’em, three new one-time beer out now and in the coming weeks. Busy folks they are. The sad part is that only one of them will get distribution outside Calgary. So, Calgary readers, drink up, but save a few for thirsty travelers from parts north, south, west and east.
Last week the brewery released Royal 100, a special beer to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mount Royal University (formerly Mount Royal College). It is an amber ale with a touch of Centennial dry hopping. I particularly like the packaging, using Wild Rose’s seasonal 1-litre swing top with a classy royal blue label. I find it quite elegant (or maybe I am just easily fooled by professional photography).
But wait, there’s more! On Friday (Oct. 1) they are releasing their latest seasonal, an Oktoberfest. While appropriately named it is coming out one day before the real Oktoberfest ends. But what do Canadians know? The brewery says the beer is brewed traditionally and respects the style guidelines. As it will only be available at their Tap Room I will have to rely on others to tell me how well it turned out.
And if you order now, we will offer a free gift of … the annual Cherry Porter. The release date of the ever popular Cherry Porter is October 29. This one, friends, will be distributed across Alberta, at least (no word on Saskatchewan). Head brewer Dave Neilly was telling me the other day that it is based on a homebrew recipe of his that totally kicked butt in competitions a number of years ago.
And if that isn’t quite enough. They have also announced that they are hosting an Oktoberfest party at the Tap Room on October 19. Tickets are $30 which comes with a free pint of Oktoberfest, a commemorative glass, entertainment, and Oktoberfest themed food. Who says you gotta be in Munich to have a good time?
Wonder what these busy bees will do for an encore in November?

All I ever heard was exultation about the Wild Rose Saison this year (and I missed it!), but what the heck happened to the Cherry Porter???
I have tried it twice so far, but I can’t get my head around it. The aroma and flavour really throw me for a loop, and not in a good way. Any insights, Beer Guy? Anyone?
I guess I’ll stick to their unbeatable Alberta Crude Stout.
Cheers,
Scott
