Mikkel Borg Bjergs might be the most interesting man in brewing. The owner, brewer, and everything else of Danish brewing upstart Mikkeller certainly produces some interesting, provocative, challenging beer. He most certainly understands what he wants to do – brew high end beer for beer connoisseurs. But on top of it all, he is also a “gypsy brewer”. He has no brewery of his own, choosing instead to “borrow” other people’s brewhouses to make his creations. It certainly is a way to keep costs down!!

Mikkel and his beer are of new interest to folks on the Prairies because they are now available out here – in better Alberta stores and I believe a small supply in the private Saskatchewan beer stores (but I might be wrong about that). So I did up a profile on them for my latest Vue Weekly column.

I have had five or six of his beer now, and to a one they are big, adventurous and carefully constructed. The flavours are chosen for particular reason, and none would be considered a mindless quaffer. You sip these beer with mindful attention, even the ones that are of standard alcohol strength.

His story is fascinating – the brewery has only been open since 2007 – and the beer well worth trying. There may not be a brewer in the world who has sparked quite as much debate and acclaim in such a short time. Not everyone is a fan, but everyone agrees his beer is not boring.
