So, Onbeer.org has been quite quiet this week. That is because I have been in Quebec City all week attending a Conference. What with the business of the conference, the socializing of the conference and trying to get some sleep I haven’t had time to write any posts. However, not all is lost. I have made a point of tracking down some Quebec City beer secrets that I will happily report on over the next little while. So the best is still to come.
However, just to make you a little jealous, I am currently sitting in Ninkasi Du Faubourg, a funky beer bar with sixteen Quebec beers on tap and a whack more in the bottle, sampling some fresh Blanche de Chambly and St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout on tap (taster size), accompanied by a decent vegetarian mini-pizza, and finishing with a small glass of Trois Pistoles en fut (that is French for “on tap”, my Anglo-Albertan friends) before I head off to the airport for my trek home.
Ninkasi has a hip, urbane feel to it and a complete commitment to Quebec beer. No Molson or Labatt here. They have a large selection of Unibroue, but also offer beer from other key Quebec micros. They even gave me a small sample of something called “Swordfish” from Microbrasserie Le Naufrageur – a Quebec brewery I had never heard of (which is hard to do). “The main floor is set up for bands (one is doing sound check as I write this) and the upstairs has a fabulous patio and a couple of smaller, more intimate rooms. I eschewed the patio because it is 30 degrees out and I have spent the last couple hours walking the city. I both deserve a beer and a break from the sun. An appropriate way to end my few days in Vieux Quebec.
I promise to write more soon. But for now, allow this short missive to whet your appetite. Back home soon.

So glad you got to see the sights and tastes when visiting the east! You will have to come back as there is so much more to explore.

Hi Rhonda,
Clearly you heard my CBC column yesterday.
The Sangria beer is made by La Barberie, the Worker Coop brewpub. They also bottle it so you will find it in better De Panneurs in Quebec City.
The brewpub is at 310 rue Saint Roch, and rather than give you directions, I suggest you just Google Map it. Be prepared to walk (or take a cab).
Have a good time!
