One Rye-itous Experiment

A year ago, my homebrewing friend, Chad, gave me a sample of his 100% wheat beer experiment (the results of which you can read about here). It was a really cool lesson in the effects of wheat on beer. Well,… Continue Reading →

Around Again on Defining “Craft”

I just can’t seem to help myself but regularly ponder how to best define “craft beer” – or more accurately how to distinguish real craft from faux craft. It is, I admit, a fairly unresolvable matter. This particular round of… Continue Reading →

An Experiment With Unintentional Souring

Most of the time, when consumers stumble across a sour beer – be it a lambic, a Flanders or some other interpretation – the brewer intended it that way. They wanted to sour the beer so used one of the… Continue Reading →

A Can vs. Bottle Taste Test

Headed to Medicine Hat (home of the in-laws) for the Giving of Thanks weekend. Took some homebrew down, as did my newly-into-homebrewing brother-in-law (well, sort of – he lives in B.C. and uses a brew-on-premises, but it’s a start). However,… Continue Reading →

Ode to the Humulus

I have mentioned before (like here and here, for example) that I am a big fan of the whole “single hop” thing – where a beer is brewed with only one variety of hop for all additions. I have come… Continue Reading →

Alberta’s Beer System, Part II

Last time (here), I started a rather stupidly ambitious plan to look at Alberta’s liquor system and offer something of an analysis – at the risk of losing readers either through boredom or political disagreeement. But mostly it has just… Continue Reading →
