I have a sneaking suspicion that there is going to be a lot happening in the coming weeks on the prairie beer scene. November looks like it is starting with a bang, and things may just keep going. I thought I would drop a quick post to let readers know of a few upcoming events:
- November 1: Unibroue’s Beer Sommolier Sylvain Bouchard will be at the Sugar Bowl from 4 to 6 pm to lead a beer and cheese pairing. This complimentary event is part of a western Canadian tour by Bouchard to promote food pairings. Obviously a selection of Unibroue’s beer will be served, paired with a selection of fine cheeses.
- November 1: The same day is the Grand Opening of the Underground Tap and Grill. The pub has been open for a month, in a soft launch phase, but tomorrow the doors are open officially. The event starts at 5:00 and goes all evening. They plan to tap a series of cask beer every hour until they run out of casks. No word on what the casks are, but I suspect they should be interesting.
- November 2 & 3:Rocky Mountain Wine and Food Festival takes place at the Shaw Convention Centre. Normally I don’t highlight this event, as it is mostly wine-focused and is big enough to take care of itself. However, I have noticed over the last couple of years an increasing presence of craft beer booths at the event. This year it looks like there will be samples from at least 25 different craft breweries (Canadian and import) with more than 60 different beer being sampled (this is an estimate from looking at the exhibitor list, so don’t go counting and giving me heck). Alley Kat, Yukon, Wild Rose and Great Western will all be there representing the prairies. For a wine thing, that ain’t so bad.
- November 27: Dieu Du Ciel will be taking over the taps at Accent Lounge for an evening. A range of DDC beer, including one-time offerings and special treats, will be available. More details will be released shortly.
That’s what I got for now, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear of more events soon. Hope to see you at some of these events!

Right! Thanks. Didn’t see them on the exhibitor list, but now that I think of it, they would be listed with Spider Beverages, who is their agent.

Hey Guys,
Missed out on giving Jason some updated info, so I thought posting it here would be a good alternative. The Underground will have 3 casks, Amber’s Lunch Pail Ale tapped at 6, Alley Kat’s Full Moon with added hops at 7, and a Chai Stout (another offering from Ambers) at 8. After some feedback that people were interested in coming after work, we’ve decided to open all day. We’ll be doing first come, first serve, so if you want to make sure you’ll have a table and cask beer, getting to the Underground early would be a good idea. Also, if we have anyone interested in getting on the list for all three casks, just make sure you mention it to whoever is running around with the clip board (likely me) and we’ll make sure you’re pint gets reserved.
As a very late addition, we’ll also have two offerings from Hog’s Head on our rotation, the Pumpkin and Baby Back, which will likely get tapped late tonight or early tomorrow. If anyone has any questions, feel free to give me an e-mail at davidhelm@undergroundtapandgrill.com, or just reply here.
Apologies for the small novella of a post, hope to see a lot of onbeer readers tomorrow.
