A quick note to do two things:
FIRST, the next Sugar Bowl / Alley Kat Cask Night is going to be Thursday October 21. 5:00 as usual. Not sure on the beer, but I was lobbying Neil to try to do something with the Pumpkin Pi. We’ll see.
SECOND, today and tomorrow is SHABAM, the showcase of Alberta beer, music and art. A fundraiser for the Kidney Foundation, it has most of Alberta’s brewers in attendance, offering their wares, including some special items. I know, for sure, it will your first chance to taste this year’s Unity Brew. I also know Alley Kat is bringing a different Cask Ale each night – one night Unity Brew the next Full Moon. It will ALSO be the first crack at sampling Glen Breton – Sherbrooke’s latest offering that has aged in scotch barrels from the Glenora distillery in Nova Scotia.
It goes from 3:00 to 10:30 both days. Tickets are $15 at the door. Think about dropping by – all proceeds going to charity, so really you can warm your heart as you satisfy your palate.

Alley Kat “Glenn Sherbrooke – A New Breed” is and has been available at Sherbrooke liquor for over a week.
It’s pretty good considering the 12.2% and beats the hell out of the Rye Dawn they attempted last year.
Any idea on when the Unity Brew will hit the shelves?

Jeff,
Yeah, I found out yesterday at SHABAM that it has been on shelves for a few days – so my mistake. Sometimes it feels like one must do weekly trips to Sherbrooke to keep up…
Thanks for the correction.

The casked Unity Brew was delicious! Also: Big Rock has Magpie on tap for nostalgia sake.

I agree, the cask Unity was superb. The folks at AK told me that added 120 g of Amarillo in a 20 litre keg. That is a whopping amount of hops! But it worked. It added an enticing grapefruit nose and gave the beer a satisfying finish. A highlight of the event.

And as a bonus for those of you committed readers who even read the bloody comments – I learned last night that the Sugar Bowl Cask for this Thursday is going to be the Apple Wit infused with cinnamon. A fascinating experiment if you ask me. Hope to see you there.

Jeff and anyone else interested,
I believe you can purchase the Unity Brew right at SHABAM (Sherbrooke off-sales at the event), and I imagine it will be available at Sherbrooke Liqour or right at the brewery (Alley Kat) next week at the latest.
Cheers,
Scott
PS: Jason – 120g of Amarillo! So it wasn’t just a misprint on the Unity cask I delivered yesterday. 🙂

This was the craft beer festival that we wanted in the first place (hear that, Edmonton International Beer Festival?). The only thing that was missing was more breweries and pole dancing.

Can some one give a break down of the festival?
I bought Unity Brew at Sherbrooke on Sunday.

Is the Glen Sherbrooke the same as the Glen Breton referenced in your article? Is it available at Sherbrooke liquor? My husband and I visited the Glenora distillery in Nova Scotia and I would like to surprise him with it.

Cindy,
Yes, that was my bad. They are the same beer – I just got the name wrong. Yes, it is available at Sherbrooke and it is very, very good.
