Intrepid Edmonton brewery, Alley Kat, turns 15 years old this year. And to celebrate they are going to release five or six limited edition beers through 2010. Now, that is a birthday present! The first one will be on store shelves any day – a smoked porter. Brewed fairly big, at 7.5% with, I am told, an eye to balancing the smoked malt qualities with toffee, chocolate and fruit characteristics of a porter. The beer is being packaged in 650 ml bottles known as “bombers” – I will let your imagination give you the reason for that.
I haven’t gotten my hands on one yet, so I will have to post again with a review when I have tried it. For the moment, I do know that I (and you, my friends) need to move fast, as only 250 cases of the beer have been made, and they are only doing it once. Others will be coming soon. I love birthdays!

For anyone interested, Neil at Alley Kat let me know that they are hosting an open house to launch the Smoked Porter, this Friday, March 12, from 5-7 at the brewery (9929 – 60 Avenue). If you are around, drop by and have a taste.
